About Child Support Terms and Modifications
Child support is closely related to child custody. In most cases, the parent who spends the most time with a child (the custodial parent) receives support payments from the other parent.
The amount paid in child support is determined by the following:
- The income of both parents
- Costs of child care
- The parents' employment status
- How much time a child spends with the custodial parent
With some exceptions, child support continues until a child is an adult (has reached 18 years of age); however, the amount paid is not set in stone. If circumstances change for either parent, they may be able to modify the terms of support and request an increase or decrease of payments.
A parent can adjust the amount given or received in payments if they can demonstrate their needs have changed in an area including their income or resources, the needs or health of a child, a modified custody plan, costs of child care, and so forth. In the end, the court will make their decision based on the well-being of the child.
